Socks’ Health Update: May 2020

I skipped an update last month because, well, frankly, I didn’t feel like getting into everything.

The good news is that Socks is still doing okay in terms of his liver disease. The meds that he’s on are working well and he’s had no issues with them.

The bad news is that his back legs continue to be a mystery.

The neurologist put him back on the previous medication that caused diarrhea plus another medication that would ease the diarrhea. I started him on a low dose, then increased to the high dose.

After a week of being on the high dose, there was no improvement at all.

I decided it was time to take things back to basics. Socks hadn’t been to see his regular vet in a year so I brought him in to see her yesterday. In desperation for a solution, a Google search done by my father revealed Socks might have a B12 deficiency. My vet is on board with looking into this and Socks got his first B12 shot yesterday.

Moving forward the plan is for him to get a shot once a week for the next five weeks, then he’d go on a monthly schedule.

If the shots work, of course.

Unfortunately even if the shots do work, we probably won’t see any improvements until the 3-4 week mark.

So at this point it’s another waiting game.

I’m crossing my fingers the shots help because if they don’t, we might have to try taking him off the steroid which is keeping the liver disease in check.

As always, life with a dog is never boring.
