Everything You Need to Take on a Hike With Your Dog

Living in Arizona means most months of the year (minus the blazing hot summer) I can go for a hike with Socks whenever I want. But taking him along isn’t a last-minute, spur-of-the-moment decision. Just like humans, dogs need hiking supplies, too. Here’s everything you need to take on a hike with your dog.

Water and a Water Bowl

Arizona is dry, dry, dry (there’s a reason people say, “it’s a dry heat”) so you should always bring lots of water on a hike. Two or three bottles is a good rule of thumb but it really depends how long you plan to hike. And don’t forget to pack a water bowl for your pooch to drink from.

First Aid Kit

The desert is full of dangerous things: scorpions, bees, snakes, and cacti to name a few. Be sure to bring a dog-specific first aid kit in case of emergency. There’s nothing worse than being out in the middle of nowhere and not being able to do anything for a hurting dog.

Booties

Not every dog will appreciate this suggestion, but booties are great for protecting your pup’s feet. Along with bugs and sharp plants, trail pathways are often littered with rocks and sometimes even glass. If your dog doesn’t mind wearing booties, slip them on before you start hiking to give his feet extra protection.

Treats

When you stop to take an eating break, bring some food for your dog to enjoy, too! After all, she’s just as tired and hungry as you. Pack a few extra treats or some cut up apple or banana for your four-legged pal to enjoy.

Poop Bags

Walking a dog means they will inevitably need and want to do business. As a courtesy to other hikers and the wildlife, don’t forget to pack poop bags. Trails don’t always have garbage cans along every part of the route so bring extra bags (such as a plastic store bag) to store your pooch’s waste until you do find a receptacle. Or you could purchase a hands-free dog poop holder.

Hiking with your dog is fun and as long as you bring all the necessary items, you and Fido can safely and happily enjoy the outdoors together!
