How to Take Care of Your Dog When You Get a Job Outside of Your Home

One of my goals this year (NOT resolutions, I abhor New Year’s Resolutions) is to write more dog mom type content for Purple and Paws. All I’ve done these last few months is updates on Socks’ health and most of them have been downers. I’ll still be updating you about his health because this blog is based on what’s happening with my pets, but I’d also like to mix things up a little by adding in helpful content every once and awhile.

So today I’m going to give some advice for anyone who finds themselves with a new job outside the home.

I’ve worked from home and I’ve done the commute and cubicle thing. Recently I returned to the 8-5 world, which meant I had to figure out who was going to take care of Socks while I’m gone during the day. Luckily for me, both of my parents are retired and willing and able to look after my boy.

But other dog owners are not as fortunate as I am, so here’s some help in figuring out how to keep Fido happy and healthy while you’re slaving away in a cube farm or behind a real desk.

Friends or Family

First, ask your circle of family and friends if any of them would be willing to take care of your dog during your working hours. Bonus points if your dog loves this person/these people. Maybe you have some retired friends or relatives like me who would be happy to look after your pup while you have your nose to the grindstone. Even better, sometimes the people who love you don’t even want monetary compensation for taking care of Fido, but it’s always nice to offer.

Doggie Day Camps

I used to take Socks to Doggie Day Camp at PetSmart once a week until he got sick. I hope to take him back one day because he loves the people and other dogs he interacts with at camp. If your dog is also a social butterfly, look into doggie day camps near you. These days, more and more facilities including boarding places and even animal hospitals are offering doggie day camp for customers. You can rest easy at work knowing your dog is playing in a safe environment with other dogs and being watched 24/7.

Dog Sitters

Maybe you don’t want the hassle of having to drop Fido off before work and pick him up after. No problem! Dog sitters are all the rage these days. Hire someone to stop by the house once, twice, possibly even three times a day to check on your dog, let him out to do business, give him a snack, and engage in a quick play session. You can even ask your dog sitter to send you pictures and text updates.

You

This option is only for a select few. If you manage to get a job relatively close to where you work (a ten or fifteen minute commute, for example), then lucky you! If you’re feeling up to it, you can come home on your lunch break and check on Fido yourself. Get away from the office and computer and give your dog some attention and love. Plus you have the added bonus of being able to eat a healthy meal at home, if you choose to do so.

No matter what option you end up choosing, it’s important to have a plan in place for your pup when your daily schedule changes. Dogs need and thrive on routine and once you’ve found an option that works for them, you can relax at work knowing Fido is being taken care of.
