Update on Socks’ Health Issues

The update is…there is no update.

Socks’ health issues continue to plague him but my vet is working hard to figure out what’s going on.

About six weeks ago, I brought Socks in and she took a blood sample and an X-ray. Nothing abnormal came back. She decided to try switching him to a lower-calorie food and advised me to give him Prevacid right before bed for four to six weeks. Unfortunately, he continued to have his up and down days for no rhyme or reason. I actually thought at one point that not giving him homemade or store-bought treats at lunch might help and I had a glimmer of hope when he had a five day streak of feeling normal. Then, out of nowhere, he had a bad day. And another bad day. And another one.

Last Tuesday I brought him in again after another horrible day and she informed me that his symptoms all pointed to Addison’s disease but to be sure, she wanted to take his blood again. Friday morning I received a call from her that his blood levels could indicate Addison’s but not necessarily (cue frustrated screaming). So she asked me to bring him in for a more comprehensive test that would shed more light on the Addison’s issue. The results should be in at the beginning of next week. If this test doesn’t reveal anything, he might have to go in for an MRI.

This whole thing has been so frustrating and stressful. I hate to see Socks suffering and I hate that I haven’t been able to do anything about it. I’m crossing my fingers that we will figure out what’s going on so we can give him the right treatment and he’ll go back to having happy, normal days.
